Flow and Flow Meters
A flow meter is an instrument used to measure the rate or quantity of a fluid (liquid, gas or steam) moving through a pipe or open channel. Accurate flow measurement is essential for process control, custody transfer, energy management and plant safety.
1. What is Flow?
Flow is the amount of fluid passing through a cross-sectional area per unit time. Mathematically:
Q = V × A
Q = flow rate, V = velocity, A = cross-sectional area
Units: L/min, m³/h, m³/s, kg/s, ton/h, GPM (gallon/min)
2. What is a Flow Meter?
A flow meter (or flow sensor) measures volume, mass or velocity of a fluid and converts it to a readable output (analog or digital). Flow meters are used across industries such as water & wastewater, oil & gas, chemical, power, food & beverage and pharmaceuticals.
3. Flow Measurement Components
- Primary element — produces a measurable change (pressure drop, velocity profile, etc.). Examples: orifice plate, venturi, pitot tube, anubar.
- Secondary element — measures/transmits the signal (e.g., DP transmitter, manometer, electronic sensor).
4. Major Types of Flow Meters
Flow meters are classified by measurement principle. Common categories include:
- Differential Pressure (DP) Flow Meters
- Velocity Flow Meters
- Positive Displacement (PD) Flow Meters
- Mass Flow Meters (Coriolis, Thermal)
- Electromagnetic (Mag) Flow Meters
- Ultrasonic Flow Meters
- Open-Channel Flow Meters (flumes, weirs)
Differential Pressure (DP) Flow Meters
DP meters measure flow from the pressure drop across a restriction. Pressure drop ∝ (flow)², so transmitters convert the measured differential pressure to flow rate. Examples: orifice plate, venturi, flow nozzle, rotameter.
Applications: steam, high temperature/high pressure lines, large pipe diameters — common in chemical, oil & gas, power and HVAC.
Advantages: simple design, low cost, large-size availability, wide material options, robust for extreme temperatures (–270°C to 500°C).
Velocity Flow Meters
Measure flow by sensing fluid velocity and applying Q = V × A. Typical examples: turbine, paddlewheel, electromagnetic, ultrasonic.
Applications: water distribution, process liquids, and many automation systems where velocity-based sensing is suitable.
Positive Displacement (PD) Flow Meters
PD meters measure the actual volume by trapping discrete volumes of fluid and counting cycles. Examples: gear, rotary vane, nutating disk, diaphragm.
Advantages: high volumetric accuracy, suitable for viscous liquids and custody transfer billing.
Mass Flow Meters
Measure mass flow directly (important when density varies). Types: Coriolis (direct mass), Thermal mass (gas mass). Widely used in chemical dosing, gas measurement and process control.
Electromagnetic & Ultrasonic Flow Meters
Electromagnetic (Mag) meters operate on Faraday’s law and require conductive fluids (water, slurries). Ultrasonic meters use transit-time or Doppler methods; suitable for clean or particulate-laden fluids depending on type.
Open-Channel Flow Meters
Used for partially filled channels, flumes and weirs. Measure level and apply hydraulic equations to compute volumetric flow (typical in irrigation and wastewater).

- Velocity examples: Turbine, Paddlewheel, Mag, Ultrasonic.
- PD examples: Gear, Diaphragm, Nutating disk, Rotary vane.

- Check installation constraints (straight run, access, inline or insertion).
- Evaluate maintenance needs and lifecycle cost.
