How to Setup VFD (Variable Frequency Drive)
How to Setup VFD (Variable Frequency Drive)
A Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) is used to control the speed and torque of an AC motor by varying the frequency and voltage supplied to the motor. Proper setup ensures efficient performance, protection, and smooth operation of your motor and system.
Required Tools & Equipment
- Multimeter (for voltage, current, and continuity checks)
- Insulation tester (Megger) – for motor insulation check
- Screwdrivers, wire strippers, and crimping tools
- Motor nameplate data
- Manufacturer’s VFD manual
Step-by-Step VFD Setup Procedure
1️⃣ Pre-Installation Check
- Verify motor rating (kW/HP, voltage, current, frequency) matches VFD output rating.
- Check supply voltage matches VFD input rating.
- Ensure grounding/earthing continuity.
- Test motor insulation (should be above 1 MĪ©).
2️⃣ Power & Motor Wiring
| Connection | Symbol | Description |
|---|---|---|
| R / L1 | Input | AC Supply Phase 1 |
| S / L2 | Input | AC Supply Phase 2 |
| T / L3 | Input | AC Supply Phase 3 |
| U | Output | Motor Phase 1 |
| V | Output | Motor Phase 2 |
| W | Output | Motor Phase 3 |
| PE / GND | Ground | Protective Earth |
Steps: Connect supply to R-S-T, motor to U-V-W, and ground both motor and VFD. Ensure no output contactor is used between VFD and motor.
3️⃣ Control Wiring
Control modes: Local (Keypad) or Remote (Terminal/PLC)
| Function | Terminal | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Start/Stop | DI1 / DI2 | Digital Inputs |
| Forward/Reverse | DI3 / DI4 | Optional |
| Speed Reference | AI1 | Analog Input (0–10V / 4–20mA) |
| Common | COM | Signal Common |
| Analog Output | AO1 | Feedback Output |
4️⃣ Parameter Setup
- Motor Rated Voltage (e.g., 415V)
- Motor Rated Current (e.g., 4.5A)
- Motor Frequency (50 Hz)
- Motor Speed (e.g., 1440 RPM)
- Acceleration & Deceleration Time (e.g., 10 sec)
- Control Mode: V/F or Vector Control
- Command Source: Keypad / Terminal / Serial
- Frequency Source: Potentiometer / AI / PLC
š” Tip:
Always set parameters as per the motor nameplate and process requirement.
Always set parameters as per the motor nameplate and process requirement.
5️⃣ Perform Test Run
- Select Local Mode (keypad control).
- Press RUN and observe motor rotation.
- Check direction, speed, and output voltage/current.
- If rotation is opposite, swap any two output phases (U-V-W).
6️⃣ Tune & Optimize
- Adjust acceleration/deceleration to prevent overcurrent.
- Fine-tune PID parameters if used.
- Check braking resistor if required.
- Enable motor protection features.
7️⃣ Final Checks & Safety
- Ensure terminal screws are tight.
- Check fan and cooling airflow.
- Save parameter settings (if required).
- Update control panel wiring diagrams.
⚡ Pro Tips
- Never connect or disconnect the motor while VFD is ON.
- Use shielded cables for analog signals to reduce noise.
- Use EMI filters/reactors for long cable runs.
Example: Simple VFD Start/Stop Wiring with PLC
| Signal | PLC Output | VFD Input |
|---|---|---|
| Start | DO | DI |
| Stop | DO | DI |
| Speed Reference | AO (4–20mA) | AI |
| Feedback | AI (4–20mA) | AO PLC |
