Toggle Switch And Its Types And ApplicationsToggle Switch diagram

Toggle Switch

A toggle switch is an electric switch and it basically turns the circuit on and off. Pushing the lever of the toggle switch turns the circuit on or off and the switch is pushed up and down or left or right. A toggle switch has two terminals one is an input terminal and the other is an output terminal. Basically, when the switch is on, no current flows in the circuit and when the switch is off, the current flows in the circuit and the electrical devices turn on.

Introduction To Toggle SwitchesWhat is a toggle switch?

Basically a toggle switch is a type of electric switch and a toggle switch has a handle or lever to turn the circuit on or off. It is used to control or turn on and off current flow or signal flow. Toggle switches are widely used in commercial as well as house hold applications. Basically this switch is easy to operate and simple in design. Toggle switches are available in different input and output terminals such as SPST toggle switch, SPDT toggle switch, DPST toggle switch, DPDT toggle switch, SPST toggle switch

Types Of Toggle Switches Based On Terminals

  1. SPST Toggle Switch
  2. SPDT Toggle Switch
  3. DPST Toggle Switch
  4. DPDT Toggle Switch
    Types Of Toggle Switches

1. SPST Toggle Switch

SPST toggle switch are also known as single pole, single throw toggle switches. And basically single pole, single throw toggle switches perform on/off action and are commonly known as on/off switches. A single pole, single throw toggle switch is used to connect a circuit or connect a circuit connection between two terminals. A single pole, single throw toggle switch is used to turn the power supply on or off.
Basically a single pole, single throw toggle switch has only one input terminal and only one output terminal and is easy to design.

2. SPDT Toggle Switch

An SPDT toggle switch is a three terminal switch and has one input terminal and two output terminals. Basically an SPDT toggle switch is used to turn a circuit on and off but these switches have two outputs or two different connections. A single pole double throw (SPDT) toggle switch is commonly known as a changeover switch. And this switch connects two different LEDs and basically this switch has one position on the first LED and another position of the switch on the second LED. And a single pole double throw (SPDT) toggle switch can turn any two different electrical circuits on, off, and on

3. DPST Toggle Switch

DPST toggle switches are also known as double pole, single throw toggle switches. And basically this switch has two inputs and two outputs. And this switch is generally used to turn on or off two different circuits. A DPST toggle switch has four terminals and they are two input terminals and two output terminals. A double pole, single throw toggle switch controls two different circuits simultaneously with one push

4. DPDT Toggle Switch

DPDT toggle switch also called double pole, double throw toggle switch, double pole, double throw toggle switch has two input terminals and four output terminals. Basically a DPDT toggle switch has six terminals and out of these six terminals two are input terminals and four are output terminals and generally one input terminal is connected to two output terminals. Basically a double pole, double throw toggle switch consists of two SPDT toggle switches

Types Of Toggle Switches

There are basically two types of toggle switches
  1. Maintained Contact Toggle Switch
  2. Momentary Toggle Switch

1. Maintained Contact Toggle Switch

Basically a maintained contact toggle switch changes its position when the lever is pushed and remains in the same position until the active lever is pushed again, such as the on or off position.

2. Momentary Toggle Switch

Basically a momentary toggle switch only operates when someone is operating the switch lever.

Toggle Switch Construction

Basically a toggle switch is constructed of different materials which are lever or handle, spring, plunger, ring and moving armature.

1. lever or Handle

Usually a lever or handle is used to turn the switch on or off and these are available above the switch

2. Spring

Basically a spring is attached to a lever or handle and the spring is used to control the position of the lever.

3. Plunger

Basically the plunger is used to connect to the base of the lever

Working Of Toggle Switches

1. Working Of SPST Toggle SwitchSingle Pole, Single Throw (SPST) toggle Switch Circuit Connection

Basically in this example we have connected a single pole, single throw toggle switch, a battery or power supply and a lamp or LED. The connection of SPST toggle switch is basically one input terminal is connected to the power supply wire and one output terminal is connected to the lamp wire. If the lamp or LED does not flash when the SPST toggle switch is on, or when the SPST toggle switch is on, the circuit is not a closed loop circuit, so no current flows, so the circuit does not turn on and the lamp remains off. And the lamp or LED flashes when the SPST toggle switch is closed, basically when the single pole, single throw toggle switch is closed when the circuit is closed and current flows between the SPST toggle switch and the lamp or LED turns on..
2. Working Of SPDT Toggle Switch

Example of SPDT toggle Switch

One terminal of one pole, double throw toggle switch is connected to power supply and other two terminals are connected to two different LEDs as per given diagram. When connected to the first output point, lamp 1 turned on and lamp 2 remained off. When connected to the second output point, lamp 2 turned on and lamp 1 remained off.

3. Working Of DPST Toggle SwitchExample of double pole single throw toggle switch

A DPST toggle switch has 2 input and output terminals as shown in the figure. Basically connect two different circuits in this toggle switch to turn the LED or lamp on or off
4. Working Of DPDT Toggle Switch

Example Of A Double Pole, Double Throw toggle Switch

We add a double pole, double throw toggle switch and four different electrical components as shown in the figure. And this switch works such that if the first position of this switch is the first two devices turn on and the other devices remain off or the second position the second two devices turn on and the first two devices remain off.

Advantages Of Toggle Switches

  • A toggle switch is used to turn the circuit on or off.
  • The toggle switch is easy to design and operate.
  • Toggle switches are available in small sizes and this makes them easy to operate.
  • The toggle switch is very strong.
  • Toggle switches control one or more circuits with a single click

Disadvantages Of Toggle Switches

  • The toggle switch produces some noise when clicking the lever or handle.
  • Toggle switches are used for low voltage circuits

Uses Of Toggle Switches

  • A toggle switch is used in many household applications.
  • Toggle switches are used in electric toys.
  • Toggle switches are used in many industrial devices.
  • Toggle switches are widely used in many electronic products

Application Of Toggle Switches

  • A toggle switch widely used in commercial as well as house hold applications.
  • A toggle switch operates one or more circuits with a single push.
  • Toggle switches are used in industrial equipment.

What is a toggle switch?

A toggle switch is an electric switch and it basically turns a circuit on and off. Pushing the toggle switch's lever turns the circuit on or off, and the switch is pushed up and down or left or right. A toggle switch has two terminals one is an input terminal and the other is an output terminal. Basically, when the switch is on, no current flows in the circuit and when the switch is off, current flows in the circuit and the electrical equipment turns on.

What are the types of toggle switches?

Types of toggle switches based on terminals are SPST Toggle Switch, SPDT Toggle Switch, DPST Toggle Switch, DPDT Toggle Switch, SPST Toggle Switch.
