Analog Signal VS Digital Signal

Analog Signal VS Digital Signal
Analog Signal VS Digital Signal

Signal

A signal is basically the transmission of information from one side to another and this information is electrical form. And signal is a way of communication and represents information or data. A signal is the carrying of information through an electromagnetic wave. Basically signal is the conversion of data into electromagnetic signal and this signal is analog or digital. And based on this format the signals are divided into two categories. And this type is analog signal and digital signal. A signal is an electrical current and is used to carry data from one system to another.

Analog Signal
Analog Signal

An analog signal is a continuous signal and an analog signal represents the equivalent of another quantity. Basically an analog signal is a continuous electrical signal. Analog signals are used to carry information. Basically this signal is represented by a sine wave and this signal has a continuous range of values. Generally analog signals are used only in analog devices. Examples of analog signals are natural sounds, human voices, analog phones, old land line telephones, etc.
Basically instrumentation devices use 4 to 20 mA or 0 to 20 mA signals. And this instrument or controller keeps this voltage constant and takes it as current signal.
An analog signal is a form of electrical energy such as voltage, current. Analog signal is more accurate than digital signal and analog signal has infinite memory. Analog signals produce more noise and analog signals have lower bandwidth. The accuracy of analog signal is not high and this signal measures natural as well as physical value. An analog signal is an electronic signal and it is time varying. And this signal value is either positive or negative. This signal acts as continuous data.

Advantages of Analog Signals

  • Analog signals is the natural form of sound.
  • Analog signals use less bandwidth.
  • Analog signals are easy to process.

Disadvantages of Analog Signals

  • Data quality is easily lost in analog signals.
  • Analog signals may contain data corruption.

Digital Signal
Digital Signal

A digital signal is a discrete signal. And this signal represents the digital data as a discrete signal. A digital signal is basically a non-continuous electrical signal. But this signal is different in value and time. And a digital signal is represented by a binary number like 0 or 1 form. And this signal connects a value in a period. This value is either 0 or 1. And this signal is composed of different voltage values.
Basically in this way the amplitude of the signal takes only limited values it is called a digital signal. These signals contain only discrete values and are represented as square waves or clock signals. And the minimum value of this signal is 0 volts and the maximum value is 5 volts. It has less subordinate noise compared to analog signal. This signal is not affected during data transmission and basically troubleshooting this signal is easy. Also these signals are easy to analyze and easy to store. Basic examples of digital signals are computers, CDs, DVDs, digital phones.

Advantages of Digital Signals

  • A digital signal contains digital data in encrypted form.
  • Digital data is easily compressed into digital signals.
  • A digital signal is simply the transmission of digital data from one network to another.

Disadvantages of Digital Signals

  • Digital signal processing is more complicated.
  • Digital signal processing is speed limited.

Difference between Analog Signal and Digital Signal

  1. Analog signal is continuous signal and digital signal is discrete signal or time separated signal.
  2. Analog signal troubleshooting is difficult and digital signal troubleshooting is easy.
  3. Analog signals are in the form of sine waves and digital signals are in the form of square waves.
  4. Analog signals are affected during data transmission and digital signals are not affected during data transmission.

  6. Components used in analog circuits are capacitors, inductors, diodes and components used in digital circuits are transistors, logic gates, micro controllers.
  7. Analog signal is more accurate and digital signal is less accurate.
  8. Analog signals take time to store and digital signals are easily stored.
  9. Analog signal produces high noise and digital signal does not produce noise.
  10. Analog signals have lower bandwidth and digital signals have higher bandwidth.
  11. Analog hardware is not flexible in implementation and digital hardware is flexible in implementation.
  12. An analog signal is stored in the form of a wave signal and a digital signal is stored in the form of binary bits.
  13. Analog instruments offer significant observational error and digital instruments do not offer observational error.
  14. Analog signal is suitable for audio and video transmission and digital signal is suitable for computing and digital electronics.
  15. Examples of analog signals are temperature, pressure, flow measurement, human voice, analog phones, FM radio signals, analog electronic equipment and examples of digital signals are value feedback, motor start, trip, computer, digital phone, CD, DVD, digital electronic equipment.
