Temperature sensor

Image
Temperature sensor A temperature sensor is an electronic device that measures the temperature of its environment and converts the input data into electronic data to record, monitor, or signal temperature changes.  Introduction Temperature is the most often-measured environmental quantity. This might be expected since most physical, electronic, chemical, mechanical, and biological systems are affected by temperature. Certain chemical reactions, biological processes, and even electronic circuits perform best within limited temperature ranges. Temperature is one of the most commonly measured variables and it is therefore not surprising that there are many ways of sensing it. Temperature sensing can be done either through direct contact with the heating source or remotely, without direct contact with the sou rce using radiated energy instead. There are a wide variety of temperature sensors on the market today, including Thermocouples, Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTDs), Thermistor

Infrared Sensor

Image
Infrared Sensor(IR Sensor) An infrared sensor is an electronic device, that emits in order to sense some aspects of the surroundings. An IR sensor can measure the heat of an object as well as detects the motion. These types of sensors measure only infrared radiation, rather than emitting it that is called a passive IR sensor.  Introduction IR technology is used in daily life and also in industries for different purposes. For example, TVs use an IR sensor to understand the signals which are transmitted from a remote control. The main benefits of IR sensors are low power usage, their simple design & their convenient features. IR signals are not noticeable by the human eye. The IR radiation in the electromagnetic spectrum can be found in the regions of the visible & microwave. Usually, the wavelengths of these waves range from 0.7 µm 5 to 1000µm. The IR spectrum can be divided into three regions like near-infrared, mid, and far-infrared. The near IR region’s waveleng

sensor Definition of sensor  A sensor is a device that detects and responds to some type of input from the physical environment. The specific input could be light, heat, motion, moisture, pressure, or any one of a great number of other environmental phenomena. A sensor is a device that detects and responds to some type of input from the physical environment. The specific input could be light, heat, motion, moisture, pressure, or any one of a great number of other environmental phenomena. The output is generally a signal that is converted to human-readable display at the sensor location or transmitted electronically over a network for reading or further processing.  Here are a few examples of the many different types of sensors: In a mercury-based glass thermometer, the input is temperature. The liquid contained expands and contracts in response, causing the level to be higher or lower on the marked gauge, which is human-readable.  An oxygen sensor in a car's emission control s

Selector switch

Selector switch A selector switch can control on or off of different currents circuit by rotating the handle. Common used for control consisting of a mechanical or electrical or electronic device for making or breaking or changing the connections in a circuit. Selector switches have two positions and three positions, illuminated and non-illuminated selector switches. Selector switches are available in a variety of styles including illuminated, non-illuminated, and non-illuminated key operated. Styles offered range from maintained or spring return, incandescent or LED, and 3-50 amps. Work with a selector switch specialist to determine the best product for your application. This product overview focuses mainly on the construction and functionality of Non-Illuminated Selector Switches.  What is a Selector Switch? Selector Switch works on a general principle; they contain a simple selector switch on the front of the panel, and a broad range of potential contact combinations (via the con

Thumbwheel switch

Image
Thumbwheel switch Thumbwheel Switches have circular parts with numbers printed on them. The circular parts can be rotated to select numbers which then form a combination of contact circuit ON/OFF signals. Those switches can convert the numbers to binary, decimal,or hexadecimal numbers and output them. What Is a Thumbwheel Switch? A Thumbwheel Switch is a setting switch that converts the numeric value selected by turning a disk-shaped part on which numbers are written into a binary, decimal, hexadecimal, or other code using the combination of ON and OFF signals for multiple contact circuits and that outputs the resulting code. Features Thumbwheel switches easily convert values to binary, decimal, or hexadecimal codes. Visually checking initial values The selected value is displayed as is, so you can always check the set value visually. This makes it easier to prevent incorrect operation. Maintaining set values Conversion to a code uses only a mechanical mechanism, so the set value is

Rotary Switch

Rotary Switch What is a Rotary Switch? A rotary switch is a switch operated by rotation. These are often chosen when more than 2 positions are needed, such as a three-speed fan or a CB radio with multiple frequencies of reception or "channels". Rotary Switch Terminology  A rotary switch is electromechanical device which is capable of selecting, making or breaking an electrical circuit  The angle of throw is the amount of shaft rotation between detent / switch position terminals  The detent system of a rotary switch provides an operator with a positive indication of rotation from one switch position to the next Types of Rotary Switch   THROW  The number of switch position terminals per pole  POLE  The terminal that is common to two or more other switch position terminals  BREAK BEFORE MAKE CONTACT  The moving contact breaks the connection with the previous fixed contact before it makes the connection with the next fixed contact  MAKE BEFORE BREAK CONTACT  The moving contac

DIP Switch

Image
DIP Switch   Dual Inline Package Switch Dual in-line package (DIP) switches are electronic packages that consist of a series of tiny switches. DIP switches are used to configure computers and peripherals such as circuit boards and modems. Actuator choices for DIP switches include slide actuators, rocker actuators, and side actuated levers (piano).  A slide actuator configuration can have raised or recessed slides.  A rocker actuator configuration can have raised or recessed rockers.  A side actuated lever configuration is typically called piano style, the "keys" are pressed down to actuate.  The number of positions available is equivalent to the number of actuators on the DIP switch. What is a DIP Switch? DIP is short for Dual In-Line Package. A DIP switch is a set of electrical switches packaged in a small box or housing. They are designed to be mounted on printed circuit boards to provide a range of electrical inputs to an electronic device based on the position of the i

Slide switch

Image
Slide switch Slide switches are mechanical switches using a slider that moves (slides) from the open (off) position to the closed (on) position. They allow control over current flow in a circuit without having to manually cut or splice wire. This type of switch is best used for controlling current flow in small projects. There are two common internal designs of slide switches. The most common design uses metal slides that make contact with the flat metal parts on the switch. As the slider is moved it causes the metal slide contacts to slide from one set of metal contacts to the other, actuating the switch. The second design uses a metal seesaw. The slider has a spring that pushes down on one side of the metal seesaw or the other. Slide switches are maintained-contact switches. Maintained-contact switches stay in one state until actuated into a new state and then remain in that state until acted upon once again. Depending on the actuator type, the handle is either flush or

Flow switch

Image
Flow switch The flow switch is designed to monitor the flow of air, liquid or steam. The device transmits a trip signal through to another device in the system, called a pump. Flow switches are typically built to indicate to the pump regarding shutting off or to turn on. A flow switch has several different uses.  Flow Switch is a mechanical switch that is switched on or off in response to the flow or non-flow of a fluid such as air or water. The switch typically operates through the use of a paddle which gets displaced due to the force of fluid moving past it. flow switches are used to determine if the flow rate is above or below a certain flow rate. This value (the set point) can be fixed or adjustable. When the set point is reached, the response can be the actuation of an electric circuit. Why Flow switch Shows wrong indication ? The below are the possible causes for the false activation of flow switch : Entrapped air or gas. Turbulence in tubing or unit Mechanical se

Level switch

Image
Level switch Level Switches are sensors with an electrical contact output at a specific liquid, powder or bulk level.  This is a simple limit switch based level switch. When the float moves with the raise in level then the output contact changes & it indicates the level position. What is level switch? A level switch is a sensor that detects the presence of liquids, powder, or granulated materials at a specific location.(It is also referred to as level sensor) For example, when a tank is supplied with liquid, it overflow. In order to prevent overflows, a level switch is installed near the top of the tank. When the liquid touches the level switch, it outputs a signal to keep the liquid from overflowing the tank. (To detect that a tank is filled with material is referred to full detection, or upper limit detection.) On the other hand, when the liquid level drops as the liquid is discharged, a level switch is used to prevent completely draining the tank. This is referred

Rocker Switch

Image
Rocker Switch Rocker switches are electrical switches actuated by a standard or dual rocker or paddle. They are available in different configurations including two-position On/Off, three-position, momentary, maintained and more. Rocker Switches get their name from the rock resembling action they do when turned ON or OFF which sounds like horse rock movement.  types of Rocker Switches Mini-Rocker Switch Piano rocker switches Automotive rocker switches Illuminated type Rocker switches. Pole and Throw Configurations SPST rocker switches make or break the connection of a single conductor in a single branch circuit. This switch type typically has two terminals and is referred to as a single-pole switch. SPDT rocker switches make or break the connection of a single conductor with either of two other single conductors. These switches usually have three terminals and are commonly used in pairs. SPDT switches are sometimes called three-way switches. DPST rocker switches make or br
